Live Bare Amber Feature: Turmeric Oil
Where It Comes From
Turmeric is a rhizomatous herbaceous perennial plant (Curcuma longa) of the ginger family, Zingiberaceae. The plant grows to about three feet tall and has yellow flowers. Native to Southeast Asia, turmeric requires temperatures between 68-86°F and high rainfall to thrive. To make turmeric oil, the oil is extracted from the plant’s bright-orange root.
Turmeric oil’s aroma can be described as earthy, warm, woody, fresh, and spicy with notes of ginger and curry.
Turmeric’s numerous health benefits have been known for thousands of years. It has many beneficial properties; Specifically, it’s antibacterial, antimicrobial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiviral, and antiparasitic.
The alpha-curcumene (a Sesquiterpene hydrocarbon) found in most turmeric oils (usually between 60-65%) is what provides the anti-inflammatory benefits. Additionally, turmeric oil can be beneficial for the digestive system. Zingeriberene and 6-gingerol are a few of the substances contained in turmeric oil that aid digestion.
Turmeric provides warm, calming support for reducing pain - specifically in muscles and joints - and helps resolve problems associated with the nervous system. It’s also commonly used in the pharmaceutical industry as an antiseptic in drugs and ointments.
So what does this mean for our complexion?
The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties provide anti-aging benefits, which are especially beneficial for skin. This is why it’s an amazing oil for natural skin care formulations.
Turmeric is also beneficial for sun-damaged skin, as it helps to brighten the complexion, fight free radicals, remove spots, and bring out skin’s natural glow.
The active ingredient in turmeric oil, curcumin, has shown to be incredibly helpful in treating inflammatory skin disorders such as eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea, as it calms and reduces inflammation.
