With winter sneaking up on us, in the states, it’s not uncommon to have difficulty adjusting to colder weather, shorter days, and gloomy days.
When the weather is gloomy and less sunlight is peeking through the clouds, your circadian rhythm may be affected (Circadian Rhythm - Your body’s biological clock that controls certain hormone production and brain wave activity.). This may leave you feeling a little…blue.
Here are a few ways you can lift your spirits through this bluesy winter season!
Make your environment brighter! If there’s minimal light outside, brighten things up inside! Allowing as much light into your environment as possible can help boost spirits. A study concluded that using a portable ultraviolet (UV) indoor tanning lamp that mimics natural sunlight can significantly improve vitamin D levels.
Brighter colors can also boost your spirits. Color specialist, Leatrice Eiseman, says how colors affect us correlates to how colors behave in nature (e.g., the color blue can be associated with the blue sky, which is a reminder of having fun outside as children). You could try brightening up your wardrobe with colorful accents, or adding bright colors throughout your home.
Exercise releases endorphins, giving you a feeling of a temporary high and boosting your mood - especially when outside. Spending time outside can also help relieve stress and improve focus. Jeannette Haviland-Jones, Ph.D., a professor of psychology, has conducted a variety of research and spoken about how the scent of flowers can cause positive emotions. The same can be said for freshly-cut grass, lavender, jasmine, pine, and more. So, take a walk with a friend - or enjoy a run down at the park. Take in your surroundings and appreciate nature!
Use Bare Oils
Our recommendations? Our Boost Bare Oils (Energy) Blend helps ease mental fatigue and strain, and can also help balance and energize your atmosphere. Frankincense Bare Oils is also excellent for mood enhancement as it helps reduce stress, calm nerves, and ease tension. Even our Lemon Bare Oils can make you feel brighter and more uplifted.
Surround Yourself With Positive People
You are who you hang out with, right? By surrounding yourself with positive people, you’re much more likely to feel optimistic and be positive yourself.
Try Something New
Tackling a daunting project you’ve been putting off for months can be extremely gratifying. Trying something new is also a great way to discover a fun hobby, and can help distract you from anything bringing your mood down.
Plan a Vacation
Take this time to experience a getaway. Travel somewhere filled with sunshine and escape the gloom. Even having new scenery around improves mood.
Lend a helping hand. Philanthropy is an excellent way to improve your mental well-being.
Create a Book and Movie List
Immersing yourself in a book or movie is a great way to put yourself in a different element and enjoy a break from real-life. Make it a party and invite your friends over for dinner, movies, and games!
Turn on the Tunes
Listen to your favorite music. I think most of us would admit that our favorite songs can almost always make us feel better.
Don’t be afraid to give these ideas a try! There’s nothing to lose. You might find yourself with an exciting new hobby and/or a renewed spirit.
